Masi - For A Sustainable Vietnamese Fishery
In today’s global context, sustainability and responsibility in supply chains are becoming increasingly critical, especially for marine-based ingredients such as fishmeal and fish oil. Companies operating in the animal feed and aquaculture feed sector must enhance their operational standards if they wish to maintain market share and achieve sustainable growth. Traceability, lawful sourcing and compliance with international regulations across the entire value chain are now key factors in building credibility and competitive advantage.
FIP and the role of MarinTrust in advancing sustainable fisheries
The Fisheries Improvement Project (FIP) is a global initiative designed to strengthen fisheries management, minimize negative impacts on marine ecosystems, and enhance traceability. By joining a FIP, companies actively participate in improving fisheries, from harvesting practices and resource management to monitoring and verifying the origin of raw materials.
In Vietnam, FIP participation is particularly important as international regulations on combating IUU fishing (Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated fishing) become increasingly stringent. FIP serves as a credible mechanism to demonstrate that raw materials are sourced legally and responsibly.
Alongside FIP, MarinTrust has become the globally recognized benchmark for responsible fishmeal and fish oil production. MarinTrust comprehensively assesses raw material sourcing and production processes to ensure that products not only meet high-quality standards but also avoid placing excessive pressure on marine ecosystems. Today, only about 51% of global fishmeal production is MarinTrust-certified, underlining its rigorous requirements and high value.
Masi’s commitment to building a responsible fishmeal & fish oil supply chain
As one of the largest fishmeal and fish oil producers in the region, Kim Long Fishmeal Processing JSC (a member of the Masi ecosystem, located in Lam Dong – formerly Binh Thuan), clearly defines its responsibility within the global value chain. With a 10,000 m² facility strategically located near seaports, the plant has direct access to fresh raw materials. It is equipped with modern, closed-loop production lines that comply with international standards such as GMP+, ISO 22000, national conformity certifications, and meets export requirements for demanding markets such as China.
For many years, Kim Long has rigorously implemented raw material control processes: no antibiotics, high protein levels, low impurities, ensuring compliance with the strict requirements of domestic and international aquafeed producers.
More importantly, Kim Long does not stop at simply meeting standards. The company is actively a Participant in a MarinTrust-accepted FIP, specifically the Multispecies FIP project, as a pathway toward full MarinTrust certification. This initiative lays the foundation for broader market expansion while affirming its position as a pioneering player in Vietnam’s marine ingredient industry.
Sustainability is the future
Masi’s participation in the FIP demonstrates not only its social responsibility but also its long-term vision:
-
Establishing a traceable and lawful supply chain, from fisheries to fishmeal and fish oil production.
-
Laying the groundwork toward achieving MarinTrust certification, enhancing the reputation of Vietnamese marine ingredients in the global market.
-
Proactively adapting to international compliance requirements, safeguarding marine resources, and ensuring sustainable livelihoods for local fishing communities.
We understand that in a global market increasingly focused on Environmental – Social – Governance (ESG) standards, only companies that are pioneering and responsible will remain resilient and thrive.
FIP participation marks the beginning of a long-term vision. Moving forward, Masi will continue to:
-
Enhance raw material management and control processes
-
Strictly comply with international standards
-
Collaborate with stakeholders to build a responsible, efficient and globally integrated Vietnamese aquaculture and fisheries sector.
Masi – Building a sustainable marine ingredient supply chain for the long-term future of Vietnam’s fisheries.
